Brampton's recorded floods go back to 1854, and more than 20,000 of its homes now have a second unit

The first recorded Etobicoke Creek flood in downtown Brampton was in 1854. The worst flood, in March 1948, left about 1.8 metres of water on Main and Queen streets, and a diversion channel was built from 1950 to 1952, before Hurricane Hazel.

In February 2022, rain on deep snow and an ice jam on the Credit River flooded about 22 homes in Churchville.

About half of Brampton's homes were built after 2000, and more than 20,000 had a registered second unit by 2024, so one water loss can displace a tenant as well as damage the house.

In Brampton, Peel handles sewer backups and the City handles street drainage

  • Sewage or water coming up through a floor drain: Peel Region's sewer-backup help (a fee may apply).
  • Storm drainage on your street: the City of Brampton, on 311.
  • A backwater valve: Peel Region rebates part of the cost when a licensed installer fits it with a permit and inspection, but a basement apartment that shares the house's sewer connection isn't eligible. Check Peel's current rules.
